Well, I’m ready to start putting Nora’s Star quilt together. I’ve made 15 blocks, and after squaring them up and taking a good hard look, I’ve chosen my favourite 12 to go into the quilt. I’ve also decided to sash them. For you non-quilters, sashing means to frame each square with fabric strips. As an example, here are two pictures: the one on the left is un-sashed. The one on the right has white sashing.
So, as I said, I’ve decided to sash each block as a way of pulling them all together and add a bit of extra width and length to the quilt. And I need some help deciding! I have three options: White sashing, Yellow sashing, or Navy Blue. Here are pictures of the yellow and navy blue options:
Of the three options, I like the white sashing the least. I’m torn between the yellow and the blue, but I’ll post all three for you to see. The yellow would be easiest to hand quilt, and would look nice because I’m using the same yellow for the backing. The blue would be harder to hand quilt because it has a gold print overlay. And the white would show the seam allowances. I could also use the yellow for sashing and backing, and the blue for binding. Or the yellow for sashing and outer border with a narrow navy inside border. Or just the opposite: Navy sashing and inner border with yellow backing and binding. sigh. You see my problem?
Anyway, I could sure use your opinion! Please leave a comment and tell me what you think about the sashing in the three layouts below! Thanks!

… I like the white. Quilting adds a lot anyway when you get to that part. Plus binding… that can be a color. I don’t like the stars sectioned away. With white, it looks like the stars float all over….
Lovely blocks! And lovely blog… nice to meet you! I’m so glad you linked up to TN&TN : )))

Well, I like the navy best, followerd by the Yellow and white least. Needs the contrast to make your beautiful blocks pop out!
Navy all the way!
Blah on the white. My favourite is the yellow. The blue does make the squares pop, but I think the yellow is much cozier and friendlier. Yellow sashing and backing, IMHO. We’re all so helpful with our differing opinions, aren’t we?
I’m all about the blue 🙂 Looks great Nita!
Well, I had to think about it overnight, because I really couldn’t decide! I agree with everybody that the blue is very striking because it makes the stars “pop”, but I also like the white because of it’s versatility. I know Nora will use the quilt for many years, and white goes with everything, and probably because it’s Spring, I like the overall light quality of the white. So, I’d have to say white #1, with blue a very, very close 2nd, and yellow third!
I love the navy!
I really like the navy:)
Mmm … BEAUTIFUL!!!
I like the navy – makes the stars pop out even more then they do now.
As much as I understand the whole quilting issue with the navy – i still like it 🙂
(I’ll make you tea while you do it??)
The yellow is softer, the white is bland and the blue is striking….Is Nora outgoing or more reserved….I think I would choose between the yellow and the blue depending on her personality.
It is a beautiful quilt no matter what color you choose…….you are so talented!! 🙂
I don’t think that the white adds much to the blocks. I like the other two better. The yellow is pretty while the navy is very striking, so mabe depends on who it is for. Personally I would go navy , I think……for my 2 cents worth.
I like the white best. Yellow second best. Blue distand third.
