Sewing in colour

I thought I would show you a bit of what I’ve been up to with my new sewing machine!

011I raided my scrap bins to make these placemats. I used the “slab” method of piecing from Sunday Morning Quilts – one of my favourite project books.

013I quilted them with straight line quilting. I can’t begin to express how wonderful it is to have a sewing machine that will sew through a quilt top! My old machine would have eaten these for supper.

015Unfortunately, even the best sewing machine won’t magically make a mitered corner. I’m getting better, though…I can definitely tell the difference between the first placemat and the last one. 🙂

And last but not least, I made 12 more blocks and sewed this “wonky hashtag” top together. It’s been a UFO for a couple of years now. Time to get it finished and on its way!

018Borders yes? Borders no?

001I’ll save the story of this quilt for another post. 🙂

Kate Spain, Charm Packs and Layer Cakes….

I adore Kate Spain fabric. I have lusted from afar for too long, and I think I am finally going to bite the budgetary biscuit and buy some. I don’t have any idea what I will make with it, but I can’t stand it for another day: I must own some Kate Spain! I can’t afford much, so I thought a handful of charm packs or a layer cake would be the best way to get a selection of an entire line.

So….my quilt knowledgeable friends… is it better to buy four $10 charm packs or is it better to buy one $40 layer cake?

And question number 2…What quilt patterns would you recommend for charm packs and/or layer cakes? Especially colour-dense ones that would suit her fabulous colour-dense fabrics?

Aren’t they yTerrainummy?!

Because You Matter: Boy Quilt #2

I’m really moving right along with these sibling quilts! Here is quilt number two:

001

It measures 43″ x 30″ – a nice size for a preschooler. I was digging around in the bottom of my stash and I came up with six 6″ squares of bright cartoon jungle print that my friend Karyne had given me years and years ago and that I had totally forgotten about.

006

I dug out some jellyroll strips in bright primary colours, cut up a dark blue cotton pillowcase donated by Pam for the background and sewed up six wonky courthouse square blocks.

002

I hand tied it with red yarn and ran around the outside border with the machine. I’m pretty sure that the machine lines are a lot straighter in person than they look in the picture. And if they aren’t, well, I guess they’re just a lot like me, lol!

Don’t ya just love pictures of quilts all rolled up? I do! Something about the colours against the binding just makes me smile.

I’m linking in with Cat Patches for her New Fabric Object linky party. We’re supposed to show what we started in April. I started the project of making three quilts for three little boys. Two down, one to go!

Ciao for now!
